Kevin Dogan, affectionately known as “Hulk D” and professionally as “Kevin 7,” passed away peacefully in his River Rouge home on May 9, 2025, at the age of 63. Born to Martha Dogan and George Kelley, Kevin arrived seven minutes after his twin brother, Kelvin (Tiny). Raised in Detroit, Michigan, by James and Martha Dogan, Kevin was a proud son of the Motor City—gifted, soulful, and unforgettable.
As the youngest twin, Kevin carried a unique charm, humor, and perspective that colored every part of his life. His musical brilliance was evident early on, beginning in his Grandfather General Grant Greer church home, “United Church of God in Christ” where his extraordinary voice quickly stood out. Fondly nicknamed “Big Head” by his Aunt Elizabeth Greer, Kevin was also exceptionally bright. He was double-promoted in school due to his high IQ and later attended Northeastern High School.
During his formative years, Kevin spent his summers in Kim Weston’s Festival of Performing Arts, where he shined phenomenally among his peers. It was there that his stage presence, confidence, and natural charisma blossomed further, preparing him for the national spotlight.
At just 18, Kevin had the rare honor of performing for Stevie Wonder—twice—highlighting his emerging future in music. He would go on to share stages with artists like Brian McKnight and regularly performed at his father’s venue, “Mr. Kelley’s Lounge,” which became an early incubator for his incredible vocal talent.
Kevin began his musical journey with groups such as The Marquations and The Meditations, and later formed The Fellas with Ditannual Hutchinson, Joe Murphy, and Britton Turner. A gifted multi-instrumentalist, Kevin mastered the harmonica, drums, and piano. His tenor voice—stretching an astonishing seven octaves—remains a rarity in the world of music.
His musical journey led him across Detroit, performing solo and with the group Enflyte. Eventually, he took his talents to national stages in Branson, Missouri, performing in tribute acts such as Doo Wop and the Drifters, Eddie Holman, The Stylistics, Stevie Wonder and as Eddie Kendricks in The Temptations. His stage name, “Kevin 7,” was personally given to him by the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, in recognition of his divine range and undeniable brilliance.
Kevin’s presence lit up every room. His infectious laughter, joyful spirit, and constant melodies created an atmosphere of love and light wherever he went. He especially cherished time spent with his children and grandchildren in his studio. One of his favorite sayings, “Oh, it’s true,” reflected his authenticity, humor, and zest for life.
Above all, Kevin was a loving father, devoted brother, proud uncle, and cherished friend. He is survived by his beloved twin brother Kelvin Dogan(Tiny); his sister Carrie Dogan; a host of other brothers and sisters; his 12 children, Maurice Williams, Sharissa Williams, Lakesha Ashford, Carl Daniels, Kevin Ratliff Sr., Marquita Greene, James Ratliff, Richard Watson, Corie Williams Sr., Kevin J. Dogan, Paul Dogan, and Daimion Dogan; 2 step-daughters Ebony Williams & Latoy Williams; 25 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins who carry on his vibrant legacy.
Like the lyrics of his song “Paradise,” that is where Kevin now resides—shining down on us with love, joy, and peace. His melody lives on in every heart he touched, every voice he inspired, and every life he lifted.
Kevin Dogan—Kevin 7—will forever be remembered as a musical legend, the “Power Voice of Detroit,” and a man who gave the world his all—on stage, in conversation, and through every heartfelt note he ever sang.
